In 1904, George Barnes moved to Lincoln to start a fruit and vegetable round, using first a handcart and then a horse and cart. As he owned the horse and cart he was asked to do the odd removal in his spare time. By 1919 the removals side of the business had grown to such an extent that it became a full time job.
The next step was to become motorised. The company used a Panard car with a modified rear end. Then in 1927 we obtained a purpose built canvas backed lorry. By that time we had moved premises in Cross Street.
In the early days long distance removals were made by rail. Our Company would take the furniture from the house to the rail yard to be carried by rail and then unloaded and delivered to a new house by another removal company.
The business continued to grow under George's control until the 2nd World War when his son, also called George, took over.
During the War the storage side of the business took off and continued to grow, as did the removal business after the War. In the mid fifties George became ill and his son Brian took up the reins.
By 1960 we had taken over two competitors, Fred Hunt and George Cuthbert Removals and had 17 vehicles on the road operating from three different areas of Lincoln.
In 1962 the Company centralised its operation in the newly built Fort Barnes on Rookery Lane and commenced construction of purpose built furniture warehouses in North Hykeham.
In 1991 Brian Barnes died and his three sons David, Jeremy and Julian took over the running of the business. In 1993 we moved into new office premises in North Hykeham, adjacent to 40,000 sq. feet modern storage facility.
In1999, to celebrate 80 years of service, we opened our new 500 container warehouse, allowing us to offer a better, safer, more secure storage system. Currently we employ 25 people with 11 removal teams based in Lincoln and Newark. |
